Becoming an indie author of fantasy and space opera science fiction has been a dream come true. I’ve read so many books I love that getting to write stories for others to enjoy is a gratifying endeavor.
I never realized how many skills I would need as an indie author. I write, edit, format, and create book covers along with managing my website.
Of course, I couldn’t live without the functionality of grammar checkers like ProWritingAid and Autocrit. They keep my prose error-free (well mostly).
Occasionally I’ll write flash fiction—roughly 200 word stories—along with short stories between 1000 and 10k. Many of those feature side characters from my books. If you’d like to know more, subscribe for my monthly newsletter.

I write short stories and novels under the pen name of MJ Baird. I was an avid reader long before I decided to pursue writing science fiction and fantasy folklore. I got degrees in engineering then ended up in IT for a spell. But from my days of childhood through my wandering adult career, I spent rainy days, evenings, and weekends reading books when I wasn’t with family or friends. I’m positive that love of reading got me to where I am now—writing books.
The joy of reading a gripping story has not faded for me, and I still can’t put down a good book to go to bed at a decent hour.
